The Little School – Mandalay
At a mere cost of $800, supporters of the Aziza Foundation
funded an annual teacher's salary, and the rental costs
of "The Little School" in Mandalay, a free
school that teaches approximately 120 slum children
ages 5-17 basic reading, writing and math skills.
Perhaps more importantly, "The
Little School" in Mandalay provides a respite for
children who might otherwise spend their days collecting
plastic bottles and other discards to do what they can
to augment the income of their parents.
For a few hours a day, The Little
School is where these children can learn and just be
children.
Thuza Win
Started in 2005 by Thuza Win with the help of two missionaries,
The Little School has become a haven for children facing
utter deprivation, and for those who cannot afford the
$15 per year to attend government school.
Thuza Win believes that instilling
a sense of morality and a belief in the children’s
self-worth is as important as the subjects she teaches.
Having grown up in extremely underprivileged circumstances
and having been helped to overcome those circumstances
by a stranger, Thuza Win is determined to share what
she knows with those less fortunate.
The Foundation helped Thuza
Win set up additional programs at The Little School,
including job training support, and helped her to send students to government school as most local jobs require
a government diploma. |
